Supercharge your breakfast with your own homemade muesli

Starting your day with a healthy breakfast can be a challenge, with many of us struggling to find the time and also the inspiration… Muesli can solve this problem, being quick to serve and full of energy boosting ingredients. However, shop bought muesli often has added sugar, oils, milk powder and even salt! You can buy premium brands to avoid these added extras, but why not make your own at a fraction of the cost?

Muesli is a super breakfast, as it contains whole-grains, fibre, protein and antioxidants, and you can add fresh fruit for extra nutrition points and flavour.

Here is a muesli mix I made the other day… I don’t have exact amounts, and for muesli I don’t think this matters. You just need a base of grains and then add yummy extras like sultanas, nuts and seeds…

My latest muesli batch contains:

  • Steel cut oats

  • Puffed rice

  • Puffed oats

The above make up the base, and together constitute about 80-85% of the mixture.

And for the rest I added in about equal measure:

  • Sultanas

  • Pumpkin seeds

  • Sunflower seeds

  • Ground flax seeds

Yummy, crunchy and satisfying! Of course there is so much more you can add, it really just depends what you have at hand. I also enjoy adding sesame seeds, dried blueberries, freeze-dried strawberries, ground mixed nuts and dried apple (I have dehydrator so make my own to avoid added oil and sugar).

If you are in a hurry, you can add your chosen milk and happily munch on that. If you have a little more time, adding fresh berries, chopped apples, sliced banana or other fruit that takes your fancy can really finish this breakfast off!

Breakfast is more of a habit for many people than a choice, so as for starting all new habits, making the change easy is really important. Having your muesli in an attractive container on your countertop, and bowl and spoon set out the night before, can help make your homemade muesli your new go to breakfast! And once you have a healthy breakfast nailed, you are much more likely to continue eating healthily throughout the day. And even if you don’t, at least you made a good start!

Nourish yourself every day :)
